Family adventures, eyes fixed on the Atlantic

The Club Med La Palmyre Resort emerges from La Coubre Forest, a huge pine forest with dunes washed by the waves of the Atlantic Ocean at the gateway to a land rich in treasures of every sort: the Charentais vineyards, oyster beds and the salt marshes of the Île d'Oléron and some of France's most beautiful towns and villages such as Mornac-sur-Seudre and Talmont sur Gironde. Foodies are in seventh heaven here: the land and sea come together to offer an incomparable culinary experience. The fifties-style charm of Royan and the unspoilt Côte Sauvage coastline of La Palmyre create a typically French seaside ambiance. In the distance is the Phare de Cordouan, the last French open sea lighthouse to be open to the public.

So we had ventured to another Club Med resort prior to this but in the winter to ski.
This was our first time for a summer resort and at this location. To be honest we were hesitant as we didn’t know this location very well and had looked at just booking somewhere in the south of France instead.
I am so happy we didn’t. As soon as we stepped in one of the GO’s(team) came over and said hello to my daughter and said it was nice to see us again. I informed them that we had just arrived as assumed he had mistaken us with someone else. But he was actually correct, he remembered us from our ski holiday where he was previously based. This is just a little example of the EXCELLENT customer service you are given. THANK YOU/MERCI Florian you are an asset to the company, we also loved watching your enthusiasm and energy entertaining the younger children in the resort as well. I look forward to seeing you head up your own village one day soon!!
So to give you a summary
The amazing parts

  • Yannis the resort manager is fabulous, he leads a great team and the entertainment they put on every day and night is wonderful. He is also very hands on during the day walking around making an effort to talk to each guest but also you can see he is hard working and not just being a face.
  • The full Club Med team every evening are all involved with the evening shows and this is what makes it fun as you see everyone from the lifeguard to the person in accounts up on the stage giving it their all. We looked forward to seeing them perform either by the pool or in the theatre.
  • Yona, Matheo and Romain who were the teens club team. They were so kind and helped my daughter get involved with all the activities they had to offer and make friends, she really enjoyed their company and overall they are just exquisite GO’s. Especially for an age group that is quite hard to please normally. She loved it.
  • The food is constant and a great selection. If you have any picky eaters they will find something here. The resort also makes sure it is varied every night but at the same time keeping the staples of cheese, salad, bread, pizza/pasta, ice cream and fruit counters. Also they have a special event where they talk through the history of the mussels in the region. Make sure you go it is delicious.
  • The variety of activities available to you to just play on your own or through lessons or for your children within their children clubs. There is the beach (free beach games provided), hiking, biking, the swimming pools, archery(the GO lady working there was so friendly and professional. I am now an archery fan), sailing, tennis, ping pong, boules and horse riding. This is without all the other activities such as pool floating class, pool workout class, all the exercises classes (yoga, stretching by, body pump, circuit) and dance classes (salsa etc)
  • Sailing specifically was one of the highlights of my children’s holiday they have done sailing before but not on catamarans. The instructor, Pandora, was extremely helpful with helping my children to understand how to ride and tack the boats my children loved it.
-the surrounding area we went for a walk and there are a few beaches/coves along the way and the view is really unusual with the forest trees and then the beach views. It gives you the best of the both. The sea isn’t as warm or as clear as it would be further south but this added to the charm and felt much more refreshing in the summer sun. Also a lot less crowded so you are not on top of each other.
-Entertainment - there are a few surprises during your stay with things beyond the staff performing which made the holiday. You will love it! The lighting and stage management team are so good. I have worked in theatres and you can tell the quality of the people who work there.
  • Song anthem's - Club Med this time we noticed has a selection of songs that they play which cement those memories. Also a few song lines they create to get everyone singing along. They will be stuck in your head in a good way.
-Resort cleaning staff well done they are constantly cleaning and picking up things every day. They do a great job and are the forgotten heroes of the resort.

Things to note/improve

  • As some people have mentioned the accommodation is clean and comfortable but the extra touches of fresh painted doors/windows/balcony railings could be improved.
-it would be great to have an iron in your room (you do have a kettle and hairdryer)
-the water bottles although great for eco creds can be annoying that you cannot just get another one.
-on the beach it would be great if you could have a few beach beds. This is a public beach and maybe this is why it isn’t available on the beach but I wonder if Club Med could allow you to pay extra to drag across even if there was a limit of 3 for the hotel etc.

Lastly just note and not a Club Med problem but if you child is only English speaking although the majority of staff members can speak English it will be luck of the draw if for your child age group there is another English speaking family in the resort during your stay. My daughter was lucky and made some fabulous friends, whereas my son unfortunately didn’t have any English speaking children.

Thank you Club Med team for making our week a memorable one. We appreciate you!!
