As we hear the news unfolding of the recent incidents in the Dominican Republic, we are equally shocked and saddened. As travelers of our own, many of us who travel with our families regularly, the Club Med team shares your concerns when it comes to safety and security when traveling.
As part of our core values at Club Med, we hold ourselves accountable and responsible for providing our guests with a safe environment which they can enjoy with their loved ones to have the best possible experience. While we regularly enact extensive safety, health and hygiene protocols, which meet and exceed industry standards, we feel it is necessary at this time to share additional details regarding our protocols.
We assure you that the safety, security and well-being of all our guests and staff are Club Med’s highest priorities. The Club Med team will continue to closely monitor the evolving situation in the Dominican Republic, and dedicate our entire team to focus even more on ensuring a high quality, safe and enjoyable vacation for all.
Here is what we are doing to ensure your safety and security:
Strict International Standard Audits for Food, Beverage, Safety and Guest Areas
Our teams are continually auditing our processes regarding food, beverage and security, and following our own internal strict guidelines set for the security of our guests. In addition, we work with international partners and our own international teams as an extra safety precaution. Each Club Med resort is audited by Cristal International Standards, the global leader in systems and services for brand quality, standards management and related risk management. Cristal auditors conduct periodic and surprise on-site audits regularly of our food, water and accommodations at all Club Med resorts, including:
• The Food Check audit, which measures 255 points of control throughout the food chain (from purchasing through preparation and service) and measures performance against global standards.
• The Aqua Check audit, which reviews water safety policies and procedures, drinking water quality, air conditioning and cooling systems, as well as spas, pools and other facilities.
• The Room Check audit, which measures and assesses room hygiene, cleanliness and safety against international benchmarks and brand standards.
The supply chain for all food items is tracked and audited to ensure all goods meet Club Med’s high quality standards.
Alcohol Suppliers and Service
Club Med has been safely and successfully operating in the Dominican Republic for more than 40 years. We carefully screen all suppliers and work only with high-quality, well-established international companies, including renowned and recognized international beverage companies. Our teams vet all of our partners and purchases through our corporate office in Florida for the Dominican Republic resort, and we also receive unexpected audits from our international teams to ensure additional checks.
The purchase of alcohol is closely regulated and occurs only through authorized, licensed and bonded suppliers.
Please note, there are no “minibars” in the guest rooms of Club Med resorts worldwide; all alcohol is served at the resort’s bars and restaurants under direct supervision and control of the bar team.
All bar staff are trained and certified in accordance to TIPS® standards (“Training for Intervention Procedures”). TIPS is the global leader in education and training for the responsible service, sale and consumption of alcohol and has trained more than 5 million participants during the last 35 years.
Use of Pesticides, Fumigation and Fertilizers
• All Club Med pesticides are approved and certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) and European Environmental Authority (“EEA”)’s standards and meet their strict international requirements.
• All chemicals further meet and respect our Green Globe environmental certification. Green Globe International, the worldwide leader for the highest standard for sustainability, provides certification for the sustainable operation and management of travel and tourism businesses and supply chain partners in accordance with internationally accepted criteria.
• Only certified and trained staff is authorized to use any pesticides.
Safety and Hygiene Standards
Our teams are focused on ensuring that proper hygiene and cleaning standards are followed in all areas of the resort. Anti-bacterial gels are located throughout the resort and staff is constantly trained on proper hygiene. The children’s clubs also undergo regular cleaning to ensure the highest level of safety for our even our youngest guests.
Security and Access Control
Club Med Punta Cana is located five minutes from the Punta Cana airport in the secluded luxury gated community of Grupo Punta Cana, far removed from the main hotel zone. Access to both Club Med Punta Cana and Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda are tightly controlled, with multiple gate control access points manned by 24-hour security, and Club Med Punta Cana’s beaches cannot be accessed by the public. In addition, the Club Med resorts are closely monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by onsite professionally trained security staff and high-tech camera system.
International Medical Team, Emergency Assistance and Travel Insurance
Club Med has an international team of medical advisors who provide expertise and guidance on any medical questions, illnesses or concerns. The Punta Cana resort has an onsite infirmary which is staffed by nurses and doctors to provide medical care for guests and staff. In addition, Club Med guests are automatically covered by an emergency assistance plan provided by Europ Assistance, a trusted partner to millions around the world, which provides worldwide emergency medical assistance for all guests during their Club Med vacation. Club Med guests from the United States and Canada are also provided with a complimentary travel insurance plan as a membership benefit, and can purchase additional travel insurance, including “Cancel for Any Reason Coverage,” through the Total Peace of Mind program.
