The historical center is classified and protected by UNESCO, with it's numerous churches and houses similar to the ones dating back to the colonial era. This part of town, around 150 blocks, counts over 1000 monuments and historical sites. Numerous other churches are to be found around the town such as the "Temple de las Rosas" who's annex is the Music conservatory, both displaying an amazing architectural style.
Inside the town, most of the buildings were built with a pink colored stone giving Morelia a unique caracter amongst all the other colonial towns of Mexico, and explains the origin of its first name "La Cantera Rosa"
